Your first months in America — step by step

  1. Social Security Number (SSN)

If you are allowed to work, apply for an SSN at a Social Security office. You need it for work, banking and taxes. Keep the card safe and never share the number casually.

  2. A phone number

Start with a prepaid plan — no SSN or credit check needed. A US number makes jobs, banking and apps much easier.

  3. Bank account & credit

Open a checking account with your passport and proof of address (many banks accept an ITIN if you have no SSN). Build credit with a secured credit card and pay the full bill every month.

  4. Housing & address changes

Read your lease carefully before renting. If you are not a citizen, you must tell USCIS your new address within 10 days of moving (Form AR-11).

  5. State ID & driver's license

Get a state ID or license from your state's DMV / Secretary of State. Prepare for the written test in Bangla.

  6. Health insurance

Depending on your status and income you may qualify for Medicaid or a Marketplace plan. Community health centers offer low-cost care.

  7. Children's school

Public school is free. Enroll at your local school district with a birth certificate, vaccination records and proof of address.

  8. Work

Only work if you have work authorization. Never pay money upfront to get a job — that's a sign of a scam.

  9. File your taxes

Taxes are usually due by April 15 every year. Free help is available through the IRS VITA program for lower incomes.

  10. Learn English

Libraries and community colleges often offer free ESL classes. Better English opens better jobs.

  11. In an emergency

In an emergency call 911 — say "Bengali" and they will connect an interpreter.
