Work Permit (EAD) Guide

Who's eligible, how to apply, and when to renew

What Is an EAD?

An Employment Authorization Document (EAD), commonly called a 'work permit,' is a card issued by USCIS that allows you to legally work in the US.

Who Is Eligible?

F-1 students on OPT/STEM OPT, green card applicants, asylum seekers, and spouses in certain visa categories (e.g. H-4, L-2), among several other categories, may be eligible for an EAD. Eligibility depends on your specific category.

How to Apply

You apply using USCIS Form I-765 (Application for Employment Authorization), along with supporting documents and the required fee. You can file online or by mail.

Processing Time

Processing time varies by category and USCIS service center — it can range from a few weeks to several months. Check the USCIS processing time link on this app's Immigration Info page.

Renewal

You can apply for renewal starting 180 days before your current EAD expires — renewing on time is important to avoid a gap in your work authorization.
