Student Visa (F-1) Guide
Maintaining status, CPT/OPT, working on campus — what you need to know
Maintaining Your Status
Keep a full-time course load every semester, report any address change to your DSO within 10 days, and renew your I-20 before it expires if needed. Your school's international student office (DSO) should always be your first point of contact.
On-Campus Work
F-1 students can work up to 20 hours/week on campus during the semester, and full-time during official school breaks — no separate work authorization is needed for this.
CPT (Curricular Practical Training)
CPT is internship/co-op training directly tied to your curriculum, and must be authorized by your DSO before you start. Starting work without authorization can violate your status.
OPT (Optional Practical Training)
After graduation, you're generally eligible for 12 months of OPT (apply to USCIS via Form I-765). STEM degree holders can get an additional 24-month extension (up to 36 months total). Processing can take a while, so plan well ahead of graduation.
Travel While on F-1
Before traveling, make sure your I-20 has a current DSO travel signature — usually valid for one year (6 months if on OPT). Always carry your visa, passport, and I-20 with you.
